Understanding customers means getting close to them
Introducing the Midlands region
I’m pleased to welcome you to the Midlands region. As a new Agent you’ll be joining an agency that is already a key part of the NFU Mutual Agency Network. It’s a region that is full of potential, and the business growth opportunities open to you and your Partner Agent(s) are significant.
After all, our reputation’s been built on developing long-standing and effective relationships, with both customers and agencies. Our experienced team is here to help you as you develop your agency’s full potential, because ultimately our success as a region is based on the success of your business.
As Regional Manager, I set, lead and deliver the sales and service strategy for the region. It’s my job – supported by an exceptional regional team – to oversee and nurture the relationships between NFU Mutual and each agency across the region and ensure that we achieve continuous growth in a regulatory compliant and customer-focused way.
The team is here to help your agency grow and develop. So you can expect a wide range of support, from leadership development training and technical product knowledge, to support in developing and executing your growth plans – all designed to enable you to achieve your ambitions for your business.
Mike Alder, Regional Manager
The Midlands region
Stretching from Stoke-on-Trent in the north to Oxford in the south, our Midlands region covers the heart of England. It’s an area that varies enormously from rural farming communities to major industrial and commercial areas. This means our agencies also have a varied book of business.
Some focus predominantly on farming, while others have a large proportion of commercial and high net worth customers. With plenty of opportunities for growth across the region, you can look forward to a lot of support to develop your business and make the most of this potential on your doorstep.
Meet some of the Agents
Harvey Merrins, Farming Agent (Witney and Oxford)
I come from a farming background and joined NFU Mutual as a graduate trainee in 1995. After being a Sales Manager, leading experienced Agents, I launched my own new agency in 2008. It was a real challenge, but I knew how the model worked, and researched the practicalities of being self-employed, so I managed to build a successful business.
I enjoy developing long-lasting customer relationships. You’re integral to their lives and welcomed into their homes as a trusted adviser. There’s a genuine connection because you’re part of the community. Being self-employed, you get to challenge yourself. You set ambitious business goals and achieve them, then set more because you want to keep growing the business and achieving.
Rachael George, Senior Agent (Bromsgrove)
I joined NFU Mutual as a graduate trainee Financial Consultant in 1999, working closely with agencies. This helped me understand how the agency system worked and how much Agents are part of their local community. I could see being an Agent offered potential to sell insurance, as well as financial products, so I decided to become self-employed.
Luckily, I started working alongside an experienced Senior Agent and learned a lot of leadership skills from him. Then I moved to Bromsgrove as a Senior Agent in a partnership. This is such a broad role. It’s about driving the business forward, increasing income and giving your team direction. By creating an enjoyable place to work, I’m encouraging productivity and keeping things growing.
