Introducing the South East region

I’m pleased to welcome you to the South East region. As a new Agent you’ll be joining an agency that is already a key part of the NFU Mutual Agency Network. It’s a region that is full of potential, and the business growth opportunities open to you and your Partner Agent(s) are significant.

After all, our reputation’s been built on developing long-standing and effective relationships, with both customers and agencies. Our experienced team is here to help you as you develop your agency’s full potential, because ultimately our success as a region is based on the success of your business.

As Regional Manager, I set, lead and deliver the sales and service strategy for the region. It’s my job – supported by an exceptional regional team – to oversee and nurture the relationships between NFU Mutual and each agency across the region and ensure that we achieve continuous growth in a regulatory compliant and customer-focused way.

The team is here to help your agency grow and develop. So you can expect a wide range of support, from leadership development training and technical product knowledge, to support in developing and executing your growth plans – all designed to enable you to achieve your ambitions for your business.

The South East region covers the south coast from Kent to Dorset, the southern part of the M4/M40 corridor and the whole of Greater London. With such a wide and varied area, we deal with a huge range of customers. This diversity is our greatest strength, and the South East is the largest NFU Mutual region in terms of premium income and growth potential in our niche markets – high net worth and commercial customers.

Hayden Langford, Farming Agent (Marlow)

Becoming an Agent offered me the opportunity to run my own business and work outside of London, which after 25 years of working in the City, was a welcome reprieve. I’ve always worked for global brokers and underwriters; while there’s a certain security to that and career opportunities ultimately, being directed from overseas and having the constant pressure to deliver more and more each year can become tiresome.

Creating a new partnership and taking on an agency with an existing book of business offers the freedom (and pride) of being self-employed without the risks and uncertainties associated with a start-up. Additionally our strong local presence and the reputation of NFU Mutual provide a stable platform for growth which, unlike working for a large corporate, you see the direct benefit of.

Sian Williams, Wider Market Agent (Essex South)

I worked for a number of national brokers before I joined NFU Mutual. Being an Agent is a breath of fresh air – no more revolving managers, job insecurity or feeling I wasn’t achieving my full potential. One advantage of working with NFU Mutual is starting with an existing book of business.

They also support us with systems, compliance and managing risk. But our strategy’s in our hands, so we decide how we want to grow. It’s not all farming, either – in fact, 52% of our business is non-farming. I deal with SMEs and mid-corporates and have the scope to write their entire portfolios. Friends joke that I do business in wellies, but sadly I haven’t had to wear a pair of wellies for work.

Doug Jackson, Senior Agent (Kent and East Sussex)

Before I joined NFU Mutual, I set up, ran and eventually sold my own business consultancy. I missed the challenge of running my own business, so the chance to take over an established agency with the freedom to evolve it was a big attraction. I hadn’t worked in insurance before, but the transition was painless.

NFU Mutual gives you plenty of support and guidance on all areas of your business but especially compliance – the biggest challenge was learning the products. But I enjoyed the chance to develop new skills and knowledge and got my licences within six months. To be a successful Agent you need be entrepreneurial, but process focused. Strategic skills are key, but you also need to be a strong leader, driving from the front.

Kayleigh Pimblett, Senior Agent (West Essex)

After joining the local NFU Mutual branch in 2007 following sixth form, I then became a Branch Manager and the local NFU Group Secretary when I was 21. It was amazing to be given that kind of responsibility so young, but with the support of NFU Mutual I learned a lot and was better prepared for when I then made the leap and became a self-employed Agent in 2015.

It was another big step, but the challenge of the role is what has kept me at NFU Mutual for more than 13 years and meant that I’ve never seriously considered commuting to London to work in the City. I think to be a successful Agent you must be adaptable as change is the only constant, but it’s more of a lifestyle than a job, and really rewarding being able to give good advice to protect people you know.
